The route of administration

There are five main ways a drug can be taken (orally, by injection, by inhalation, absorption via mucous membranes and skin patches) and this has a significant impact on the effects of the drug in terms of:
  • onset (how soon the effects of the drug are felt)
  • intensity (how strong the effects of the drug are)
  • duration (how long the effects of the drug last)
